Glen Lake
Glen Lake is located on the northeast side of Bozeman, but this location has nothing to do with the lake. This is one of my favorite locations because of the variety of scenery. The trail system, long grass, variety of trees, bridge and creek provide a different backdrop at every turn. The mountain views are the giant cherry on top. The wide-open spaces make it perfect for larger groups. Pros: close to parking, in town, tons of variety and usable year-round Cons: Spread out so there is walking involved
Graf Park
This location is on the south side of Bozeman. The trail system runs through this park and offers a wide variety of trees, mountain views, and long grass. Pros: Easy parking, in town, usable May – October Cons: the trail can be a bit busy but people typically pass quickly.
Cherry River
Cherry River is very similar to the mountain views of Glen Lake. In the early summer, there is a chance for wildflowers. This spot is usable year-round. Pro: Beautiful light, close parking, and mountain views Con: dogs must be leashed at all times and very busy in October.
Peets Hill
Peets Hill is a two-part location at either the base of the hill or Lindley Park (typically when there are no longer leaves on the trees). It is usable year round and offers amazing mountain views at the end of the session. Pro: expansive views Con: Active dog park; if you or your kids are not comfortable with random dogs approaching, don’t pick this spot. Driving between spots and a bit of a walk to get to the top.
Story Mill
Story Mill Park is on the northeast side of town. There is a variety of scenery; creek, bridge, and great boulders. I prefer this location from June – October. Pro: close parking Con: No dogs south of the road through the park. Don’t pick this spot if you’re bringing a dog.
Kirk Hill
Kirk Hill is south of town. I typically prefer this location in the late fall. Parking is close and there are lots of pine trees and an old fence. Pro: Very minimal walking, close parking Con: a little way out of town depending on your location.
Creekside
Creekside is on the northeast side of town. There is a creek, bridge, and open field. Pro: minimal walking, close parking Con: the creek fluctuates and changes so you are not always able to stand on the rocks. I have not photographed a family here in the winter.
Hyalite
Hyalite is 30 minutes south of town. There is a ton of variety and EPIC mountain views. Typically we are driving between 2 – 3 locations plush walking. Pro: scenery! Con: a long drive, and due to the mountain location session time is 30 minutes earlier than an in-town session (which could also be a pro), no cell service so if you are unfamiliar with the area PLEASE let me know!
Axtell Bridge
Axtell Bridge fishing access is between Four Corners and Gallatin Gateway. I typically prefer this location in the late fall. Parking is close. There is an old fun bridge, river, and fall colors Pro: minimal walking, close parking Con: A popular fishing access it can be very busy. The bridge is an active roadway so time spent on the bridge is minimal. I have not photographed a family here in the winter yet.
